The Sognefjell road climbs to 1434 metres between Lom and Turtagro, crossing a landscape of bare rock, snow patches and small lakes. It is one of the few places in Europe where a public road feels genuinely arctic in July.
Season and conditions
The pass usually opens in the second half of May and closes with the first serious snow, often in late October. Snow banks at the summit persist into July in many years.
Doing it properly
- Fill the tank in Lom or Sogndal, there is nothing at the top
- Allow two and a half hours for what looks like ninety minutes
- Stop at the marked viewpoints, several are architect designed and worth the pause
Combine it with the Jotunheimen hiking trails if you have an extra day. Besseggen is the famous walk and it earns its reputation.
