The wildebeest migration is often described as an event with dates. It is closer to a continuous circuit driven by rain and grass. Where the herds are in a given month varies year to year, and any operator promising a precise location is overstating.
Rough seasonal pattern
- December to March, herds on the southern short grass plains, calving season
- April to May, long rains, movement west and north, fewer visitors and lower prices
- June to July, western corridor and Grumeti river crossings
- August to October, northern Serengeti and the Mara river
Practical points
Park fees are significant and usually quoted separately from accommodation. Domestic flights from Arusha save a full day of driving each way. Vehicle quality and guide experience make more difference to a safari than lodge luxury does.
If wildlife is your reason for the trip, budget for at least three full days in the park. Single overnight visits spend most of their time in transit.
