The Faroes are not a warm weather destination and never pretend to be. The appeal is cliff, grass, fog and the way light moves across it. Tunnels and ferries connect most of the inhabited islands, so a car covers a lot in a few days.
Expect to change plans
Fog can close a viewpoint for a full day. Locals plan around this without complaint and visitors should too. Keep two or three options for each day and pick in the morning.
Practical points
- Several hiking routes cross private land and charge a fee, which is legitimate
- Sub-sea tunnels carry tolls that are billed to rental cars
- Sheep have right of way and act unpredictably
May to September gives the most reliable access. June has the longest days. Puffins are present roughly from May to August at Mykines, where access is regulated.
