Where To Travel In Autumn

Autumn combines the best remaining weather of the year with the crowd and price relief of a season most travelers overlook.

Autumn colour in a forest

September and October are, for a large share of the world's most visited destinations, the best two months of the year to actually be there. Summer's crowds have thinned, prices have dropped from their peak, and the weather in much of the temperate world is still mild enough for full days of walking. Autumn's one real complication is foliage timing, which varies by year and by a few weeks depending on latitude and altitude.

Southern Europe's second good window

Italy, Portugal, Spain and Greece cool from their summer peak through September and into a genuinely comfortable October. Sea temperatures remain warm enough for swimming into early October in much of the Mediterranean, even as air temperatures ease into the low twenties. This is also grape harvest season, which makes wine regions such as Tuscany, the Douro Valley and Rioja particularly active and interesting to visit.

Foliage travel in New England and Japan

Two of the world's most tracked foliage seasons run on very different timelines. New England's turn usually peaks in the first half of October, moving from north to south across a few weeks. Japan's autumn colour is later and slower, typically peaking in Kyoto and Tokyo in mid to late November, a full month behind the cherry blossoms in reverse sequence. Both require booking accommodation well ahead of the confirmed peak, since demand concentrates hard into a two-week window.

  • New England foliage generally peaks early October in the north, mid-October further south
  • Japan's momiji season typically peaks mid to late November in Kyoto
  • Both destinations see hotel rates rise sharply for the peak fortnight

Northern Europe's shortening days

By late October, daylight in Scandinavia and the Baltic states has shortened considerably, and this is worth planning around rather than ignoring. A city trip to Stockholm or Copenhagen in September still gets a reasonable working day of light, but by early November sunset arrives mid-afternoon. Autumn there is better spent in the first half of the season, with November treated as the start of the darker winter travel calendar.

Desert and dry-climate destinations reopen

Morocco, Jordan, and much of the Middle East move out of their punishing summer heat by October, making desert excursions and city walking practical again. The same applies to India's dry season, which generally begins around October after the monsoon clears, opening up much of the country for the comfortable travel months that run through winter.

What closes for the season

Autumn is when many summer-only operations wind down. Greek and Croatian island ferries reduce frequency from late September, and some smaller island hotels close entirely by mid-October. Alpine ski lifts used for summer hiking access typically shut in September or early October before winter operations begin, creating a short dead zone at altitude.

  • Confirm ferry schedules directly rather than relying on summer timetables after mid-September
  • Alpine cable cars often pause for maintenance between summer and ski seasons
  • Beach town restaurants in smaller Mediterranean towns may close by late October

Packing for the shift

Autumn asks for the same layering logic as spring, but moving in the opposite temperature direction. A packable insulated layer, a rain shell, and shoes that handle wet leaves and cobblestones cover most autumn conditions across temperate destinations.

Build an autumn trip around foliage timing and post-summer pricing.
